Dundee becomes first city to have SNP majority administration

Dundee has become Scotland’s first city to have a majority SNP administration.

Results of the count held at Dundee International Sports Centre revealed 16 seats for SNP, ten for labour and just one each for the Conservative, Lib Dem and Independent parties.

All 16 candidates put up by the SNP were elected meaning the party now has full control of the council.

There were cheers, tears and jumps up and down from activists as the results came in.

SNP group leader Ken Guild said he was "absolutely delighted".

He added: "This is a historic day for Dundee. I believe we are the first city in Scotland where the SNP has an overall majority."

The SNP had already been in control of the city council as a minority administration.

Turn-out across Dundee’s eight wards varied from as low as 29% to 48%.

Previously the 29 seats for Dundee were split 14 SNP, 8 Labour, 3 Conservative, 2 Lib Dem and 2 Independent.

The results were announced just after 2.30pm on Friday.

Voters went to the polls to vote on Thursday with the count taking place on Friday morning.

In Perth and Kinross the split was 18 seats SNP, 10 Conservative, 5 Lib Dem, 4 Labour, one Perth Independent Candidates' Party and one Independent.

The SNP are also in control in Angus with 15 party councillors.
