Man charged with wilful fire-raising in connection with two blazes

A 28-year-old man charged in connection with two serious fires in Dundee has been released without appearing in court.

The man had been due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Thursday on charges relating to blazes at the city’s Garland Place and Union Street.

Tayside Police launched a joint investigation with Tayside Fire and Rescue Service after 15 people had to be evacuated from the blaze at Garland Place last Wednesday night.

Two people were taken to hospital and a firefighter was also injured at the scene.

The following day residents were trapped in their flats as a fire broke out in a stairwell at Union Street.

A spokesman for the Crown Office said: "The Procurator Fiscal at Dundee received a report concerning a 28-year-old man in connection with alleged incidents on April 25 and 26.

"After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case by the Procurator Fiscal, the accused was liberated pending further investigation and did not appear in court."

He stressed that proceedings were still active.
