Two women racially abused a man after they spent hours digging out a parking space in the snow.

Karen McDonald and Rosemary Stewart spent two hours clearing room for Stewart's disabled mother during the heavy snowfalls of December 2010.

When they returned to Dundee's Pitkerro Road they found Akram Ather had parked in the spot.

The pair went to his door, telling them there "would be trouble" if he didn't move his car, before Stewart called him a "black b******".

Dundee Sheriff Court heard on Thursday Mr Ather was abused after he "stole" the space.

Mr Ather's wife, Elizabeth Ather, told a previous trial: "She said it took two hours to dig out space and there would be trouble if he didn't move his car before a certain person came back. The racial abuse then took place when he refused."

Mrs Ather said the car had remained in the controversial space for two hours after the hospital appointment was cancelled because of the weather.

Mother-of-six Stewart said her disabled mother had sat in the car for hours while the space was dug out for her. When she returned later she had to "drive around" for a lengthy period as the snow had rendered most of the parking spaces in the area out of action.

McDonald, 36, and Stewart, 36, both of Pitkerro Road, Dundee, were found guilty of acting in a racially aggravated manner towards Mr Ather.

Sheriff Elizabeth Munro admonished the pair. She said: "I remember this case well despite the number of trials I have to deal with.

"I can understand why you were upset in the way that you were as I remember what the conditions were like that day. But your behaviour was completely unacceptable."
