A 14-year-old boy and two other teenagers have been accused of using Facebook to attempt to incite riots in a Scottish city.

Shawn Divin, 16, and Jordan McGinley, 18, were arrested in Dundee on Thursday over allegations they started a page on the social media site urging people to riot in the city centre.

A 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named, was also arrested on Thursday morning accused of being involved in the page that encouraged a riot in the city.

The arrests came a day after two other teenagers appeared in court and were remanded in custody over similar charges.

Liam Allan, 18, from Dundee, and Alexander McQuarrie, 16, from Glasgow, appeared at Dundee and Glasgow Sheriff Courts respectively on Wednesday accused of breach of the peace. Both were refused bail and remanded.

A Tayside Police spokesman said: "The posting of such comments, whether or not the intention is to encourage disturbances, can cause alarm and distress to the communities in which we live and encourage others to behave in a violent or disorderly manner.

"These posts are taken seriously by the police and it is clear that the courts are also treating them in a similar manner.

"We would wish to warn others who may be thinking of posting inciting remarks on social media websites that any such comments will be fully investigated, and dealt with in a robust but proportionate manner."

The three teenagers will appear in court on Friday.
