Young carers were given a hobbit-sized helping hand from a Hollywood star at the launch of a new educational cartoon on Tuesday.

Lord of the Rings actor Billy Boyd launched the service in Dundee, which aims to offer support to Scotland's 100,000 children who sacrifice their childhood to care for loved ones.

Funded by the Scottish Government and created by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, Eryc and Trayc are cartoon characters who are young carers.

Through a website detailing their stories, organisers are hoping to provide help and advice for young carers across the country.

Mr Boyd voices the part of Eryc in the cartoon adventures. He said: "I was delighted to provide a 'voice' for Scotland's young carers.

“So many children of this age miss out on schooling and enjoying time with friends because they are caring for someone who can't manage without their support.

“I am confident that the new film and website about young carers will raise awareness of the issue, and show teachers and young carers where they can get further help."

Public health minister Michael Matheson joined the filmstar at Dundee's Hillside Primary School to launch a website offering help and support for young carers.

He added: “Young carers face a number of challenges in their day-to-day lives, which is why this initiative is so important.

“Eryc and Trayc will help raise the profile of young carers, and to remove the stigma around asking for help. With the support of the Scottish Government and a famous face in the shape of Billy Boyd, I'm sure these new characters will be a hit with young carers around Scotland."
