More than 35,000 people expected to gather for Leuchars airshow

Crowds of more than 35,000 are expected to gather for Leuchars airshow on Saturday.

The annual event, which features a range of displays of current and historic aircraft, is this year marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

It is expected to finish with a Typhoon flypast in a Diamond Nine Formation.

The aircraft will be flown by pilots of 6 Squadron along with colleagues who are standing by to become part of 1 (Fighter) Squadron which will re-form officially as the RAF’s fourth front-line Typhoon Unit at the Airshow with a Stand Up parade.

Air officer for Scotland and station commander RAF Leuchars, air commodore Gavin Parker said: "The theme for this year’s Airshow is ‘A Diamond Celebration’ so, providing it is safe to do so, we feel a 9-ship formation would be an appropriate display to mark our Sovereign’s reign and the contribution that all the Armed Forces have made in support of our Commander-in-Chief."

Fife Constabulary have warned motorists to expect heavy traffic in the area and to prepare ahead for their journeys.

Chief inspector Adrian Annandale, head of road policing in Fife, said: "The Leuchars Air Show attracts more than 35,000 people, most travelling by road. This large number of people places considerable strain on the roads within North East Fife and causes the potential for delays.

"Fife Constabulary wants all people visiting the Leuchars Air Show to have a safe day out with as few delays as possible."
