A mystery punter has scooped almost £30,000 after placing a 50p stake on nine football matches.

However the huge jackpot remains unclaimed almost a week after the bet was won.

The unknown gambler placed the 64,000/1 bet at the William Hill shop in Arbroath last Friday and has netted a total of £29,595.01.

He staked 50p on a nine-game accumulator including unlikely results such as Wolverhampton Wanderers - recently relegated from the English Premier League - to draw with Aldershot Town of League Two.

Shocked staff at the betting shop say they are stunned that the lucky winner has not yet claimed his cash.

Gail McNairn, deputy manager of the shop in the Angus town's High Street, said: "We don't have a clue who it is - we can take up to 40 football coupon bets after tea time on a Friday and it is impossible to remember them all.

“This person has put on £1.50 in total and one of his 50p bets has won nearly £30,000.

"Every time someone comes in and asks us to check their coupon you are thinking 'this could be the one'. It's so exciting and it's a waiting game now."

She said that because some games went to extra time with one team eventually coming out victorious the gambler might not be aware they had won.
