A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a father found injured in a street.

John McMurchie, from Errol, Perthshire, was discovered by two passers-by at around 4am on Sunday.

The 50-year-old was lying in Dundee's Fintry Terrace and was taken to the city's Ninewells Hospital where he died a short time later.

A 63-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death, while forensic officers are searching the street where Mr McMurchie was found, as well as a house in nearby Murrayfield Gardens, where he had been shortly before he was attacked.

Mr McMurchie's family released a statement about his death. It read: "As a husband, brother, father to five and grandfather to two, as well as an uncle, John was loving and very much-loved by all of his family. No words can express the loss that we feel at him being taken from us so suddenly.

"John had a terrific personality and was very much a larger than life character that was happy to be the life and soul of the party. At the same time he was always there for those around him and would help anyone who needed his support or help.

"It is important that we know how John died and we would ask that anyone who knows anything that can help Tayside Police with their investigation to contact them."

Officers from Tayside Police have cordoned off the street and an additional property in another street.

House-to-house enquiries are being carried out by police, along with a review of public and private CCTV in the area.

Detective Inspector Bobby Dow, the senior investigating officer, said: "We know that Mr McMurchie was at an address in Murrayfield Gardens prior to being found seriously injured in Fintry Terrace. It’s believed he left that address shortly after 3.30am.

"We want to establish his movements between leaving that address and then being discovered about half an hour later and we are aware that people were in the area at the time. Whether they were people making their way home after a night out or from work, out late at night walking the dog, or taxi drivers dropping off fares - our appeal goes out to them.

"If you were in the area we want to speak with you. The information you have could be of great assistance in helping us to find out how a much-loved husband and father died."
