Mother fears for autistic daughter who beats herself up

The mother of an autistic girl in Angus who repeatedly punches herself in the head says she fears her daughter will end up killing herself.

Samantha Bremner says her daughter April's self-harming has become so bad she is at breaking point.

She is now making a desperate plea to health chiefs for more specialist treatment for her daughter.

Sometimes April will scream for more than two hours, whilst punching herself on the head.

Last week, she needed emergency surgery to remove a blot clot - a direct result of her self-inflicted beatings.

Samantha said: “It's unstoppable. When it starts, she just keeps going relentlessly. She can't even eat just now. She's not able to function to eat or drink or swallow . She's not able to do anything. Her quality of life is downhill.”

Samantha says she has had lots of support but claims little has been offered in terms of specialist treatment to help her daughter.

Samantha added: “I haven't seen any other children like here anywhere. I've been told she's very rare and I feel they just don't know what to do with her.

“Somebody somewhere must have an incline of what to do and what tests to do and what investigations to do.

In a statement NHS Tayside said they are happy to meet with Samantha.

Samantha said: “We can't go on like this. It's too painful to see your child suffer and know she's suffering. It's plain to see. Everyone's disturbed when they see April like this.”

April was admitted to hospital in Dundee on Thursday morning.

Her mum hopes it will lead to more specialist support and a much needed breakthrough in her daughter's condition.
