An animal welfare charity fears the rabbit could be Scotland's forgotten pet.

The Scottish SPCA say the number of unwanted, neglected and mistreated rabbits has rocketed over the last four years.

At the charity’s centre at Petterden near Dundee more than 100 rabbits that have been cared for since January.

Last year, they rescued 116 and more than 700 were saved across Scotland.

The charity's hoping its rabbit awareness week - which runs until Sunday - will help the public to understand how much care and committment these furry pets need.

Sharon Comrie, SSPCA Manager, said: "It is very worrying. People don't realise the responsibility of taking on a rabbit. It isn't just a cute wee bunny sitting in a hutch at the bottom of the garden. It's a lot of work involved. You need to handle them every day and also the feeding costs and vet costs if needed so you have a financial impact on there as well."
