A student described as a 'rising sports star' has died after an accident while on holiday in Cyprus.

Jonathan Wookey, known as Jonny, 22, died in hospital on Wednesday night, after he suffered serious head injuries in an accident.

Mr Wookey, who was from Toronto, Canada, was an international relations student, at St Andrews University.

A statement from the university’s principal professor Louise Richardson said Mr Wookey, was with close friends when the incident happened.

The details of the accident have not yet been confirmed and it is also not known where in Cyprus he was injured.

Professor Richardson said: "Jonny’s friends and teachers knew him as an energetic and inspiring member of the St Andrews community. A graduate of Upper College Canada and a native of Toronto, he was instrumental in the creation of both the Canadian Club at St Andrews, a society dedicated to fundraising to send young people to summer camp, and the newly founded St Andrews ice hockey team, The Typhoons.

"As an IR student his intellectual curiosity spanned a diverse range of subjects. Friends say that his excitement about all things, including his upcoming employment at an investment bank in London, was contagious. He worked tirelessly to fulfil his passions.

"Jonny’s athleticism was apparent through his dedication to running, he completed the Edinburgh marathon last year, and his frequent games of tennis and exploratory hikes throughout Scotland.

"His close friends say that confidence and curiosity were two of Jonny’s most striking attributes. To all those who knew him, he was an intensely genuine, funny and kind friend. He was able to engage on a personal level with people from diverse backgrounds because he was truly interested in learning more about all those who crossed his path.

"Jonny was with his friends when this tragic accident occurred and was, as always, enjoying the time shared with some of those closest to him. The St Andrews community has lost a dear friend and from the messages I have received from his friends, I know how much he will be missed.

"Family was of the utmost importance for Jonny, and the strong connection he shared with his parents and two sisters was obvious to those around him. I am sure our whole community will join with me in extending our deepest sympathies to them at this enormously difficult time."

Professor Richardson added that Mr Wookey’s friends plan to hold a memorial event for him in St Andrews during graduation week.
