Drugs squad police officer suspended and charged with assault

A Tayside Police drugs squad office has been suspended and charged with assault.

It is understood senior Tayside officers uncovered “matters of concern” about how certain officers in the squad went about their duties and a report was made to the procurator fiscal.

Drugs squad officers from Grampian Police were then called in to investigate which resulted in one officer in the drugs squad being suspended with immediate effect.

It is understood the 40-year-old man has been charged with assault over his alleged conduct in more than one incident. He has not yet appeared in court.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said: “Tayside Police identified matters of concern about the working practices of certain individuals and, following discussions with the procurator fiscal, requested that a neighbouring force conduct an independent investigation.

“Tayside Police can confirm that a 40-year-old serving police officer was suspended with immediate effect in January 2012 after he was charged in relation to alleged assaults. It is not appropriate to comment further at this time.”

A spokesman for the Crown Office said: “Following discussions with Tayside Police, during which they raised concerns about the working practices of certain individuals, the procurator fiscal has requested that a neighbouring force conducts an independent investigation. As the investigation is ongoing it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

As well as the officer who has been suspended and charged it is believed some officers were moved to other duties.
