Over £1.7million has been awarded to outstanding buildings of worship in need of repair across Scotland.

The Place of Worship awards from Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund are to be used to make the buildings stable and watertight.

Culture Minister Michael Russell said in a statement: "For many people their church, cathedral, temple or mosque is so much more than a building. It represents their faith, friendships and community values, often providing a home for groups of all different sorts.

"This money will fund work to keep these buildings open, watertight and able to continue serving their communities."

Colin McLean, of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "A church is more than a place of worship. Its architecture, often prominent on the skyline, is a reminder of its place in history, its interior a space where local groups can gather to share interests.

"By helping maintain these historic buildings, we are preserving an important part of the past while making sure it fulfils the needs of community life today.

"The Heritage Lottery Fund is pleased to be able to work in partnership with Historic Scotland to help secure the future of these fine buildings through our joint Places of Worship Scheme."

The latest round of funding will support seven places of worship including Kelvinside Hillhead Church, St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church and St Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Glasgow which will receive funding for stone and roof repairs.

St Paul's RC Church, Glenrothes; St Mary of Assumption Cathedral, in Aberdeen; St Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral, Edinburgh; and Meadowside St Paul's Church, Dundee, are also to receive funding for repairs to make the buildings watertight.
