The competition to design a Fairtrade T-shirt has been won by Kyle Johnston from a primary school in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

The 11-year-old is a pupil at St. John's Primary school and he come out on top of almost 600 entrants.

He received his certificate and goody-bag of prizes at the Newton Mearns Baptist Church's Pudding Feast Fairtrade event.

The award was presented by MSP Ken Macintosh, who along with local MP and current Secretary of State for Scotland Jim Murphy, organised the competition.

Runners up were Michael McCaig, 10, of Our Lady of the Missions Primary and Heather Allan, 11, of Carolside Primary.

Mr Mcintosh and Mr Murphy had asked pupils to design a Fairtrade T-Shirt to help local schools towards achieving Fairtrade school status.

Mr Mcintosh said in a statement: "The response was fantastic, with almost 600 entries arriving at the parliamentary office in Clarkston.

"The young people of East Renfrewhire are once more setting us all an example. In recent years they have designed posters and created a menu for a Fairtrade school dinner as part of the area's contribution to Fairtrade fortnight.

"Their enthusiasm for Fairtrade, their sense of justice for people from developing countries is only matched by an amazing ability to put that into images and words in this T shirt competition.  All the winners and our hundreds of entrants can be justifiably proud of their work."
