Solidarity Party leader Tommy Sheridan is considering making a political comeback as a member of the European Parliament.

The former Socialist MSP has been in talks with rail union chiefs about joining a left-wing coalition for the forthcoming European Parliament vote in June.

A spokesman for Solidarity said: "Tommy is interested in principle and we are in discussions with the RMT. There should be an announcement about it nationally later in the week.

"Solidarity will make an announcement soon."

If Solidarity decides to stand, it is expected that the party will field about six or seven candidates. It is understood that the coalition will be led by rail union boss Bob Crow. The Fire Brigade Union is also believed to be involved in the venture, according to the Solidarity spokesman.

He added: "We were in discussions yesterday.

"The idea is to create a broad left list representing different trade unions and left wing groups as an alternative to Labour in the European elections."

The new coalition will have to get 12-13% of the vote for its candidate to become an MEP.
