Bishopbriggs residents want a meeting with Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to discuss the name of the new prison being built in the area.
Local people are concerned that the new jail, being built of the site of the former Low Moss Prison, could be named HM Prison Bishopbriggs.
This is the working title used by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) for the multi-million pound new jail.
SPS bosses have said that the final decision has not been taken over the name.
Campaigners from the Woodhill Residents' Group and MP Jo Swinson have collected hundreds of signatures on a petition of residents who are opposed to the name.
Ms Swinson told the Kirkintilloch Herald: "The residents of Bishopbriggs are angry about the working title, and I believe a face to face meeting will bring home to the Justice Secretary how strongly they feel about the matter.
"I have collected over a thousand signatures from residents who feel that HM Prison Bishopbriggs should be ruled out as a possible name for the prison.
"It makes no sense to use this working title for three years until a decision is made, when residents are so clearly opposed to the name. I hope Kenny MacAskill will agree to meet with my constituents and intervene on their behalf."
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: "We will respond to this request, however Mr MacAskill believes that this is a matter for the SPS."
