Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) have unveiled a specially designed carriage made up of pictures of Robert Burns for this years Homecoming celebrations. It has taken a lot of work and stv news was given exclusive access to film it all before the colourful carriage rolled out onto the tracks for the very first time.
Glasgow's Subway has been part of the city's transport system for 113 years. It is the third oldest underground railway in the world and carries 14 million passengers each year.
The orange paintwork has become familiar to those using the Subway. It has even been known as 'The Clockwork Orange.' But to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Rabbie Burns birth one of the carriages has been transformed in tribute to the Bard
SPT will be spending £20,000 on Burns birthday - £6,000 of that will cover the cost of the new look. It is not the first time the carriages have been re-designed, but this job is particularly unique.
David Wallace, director of Subway operations, said: "This is something a wee bit different because It's not something that we'll generate any income for us, it's something we're doing for ourselves to celebrate Burns. I think they'll like the design, it's a Sheila Tennant design I think they'll love it.
"What the public see is the finished article but there are literally tens of hours of work behind that and there's a whole process to re-apply vinyls and what they'll see is the finished article."
From January 21, it looks like Burns will be joining passengers in travelling miles around the city on the underground.
