A police officer and a colleague were injured after their car was smashed into by a lorry as they stopped to assist a breakdown.
The men had stopped on the A8 Greenock Road to help fellow traffic officers dealing with a breakdown when the collision occurred.
Police said the lorry struck the stationary car from behind before careering through the central barrier and stopping on the opposing carriageway.
A 33-year-old traffic officer who was driving the marked Ford Mondeo and a 57-year-old colleague from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency were hurt in the crash.
They were taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries then released after the crash between Langbank and Port Glasgow, in Renfrewshire, on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the 28 year-old lorry driver was also taken to Inverclyde Royal but did not require any treatment.
The A8 was closed for several hours while enquiries into the crash were carried out.
Strathclyde Police said an investigation is currently underway to establish the cause of the crash.
Anyone with information is asked to contact road policing officers at Greenock Police Office on telephone number 01475 492500.
