More than 30 people were forced to leave their homes in Glasgow as a fire in the Ibrox area sent a pall of smoke over much of the city.
Emergency services were called to the scene in Fairley Street, a short way from the Rangers stadium, to tackle a blaze that broke out in a yard at the rear of a vehicle repair centre storage depot.
The alarm was raised shortly after 8am on Monday. Several streets in the area were closed, including Fairley Street, Copland Road, Carmichael Street and Whitefield Road.
Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a well-developed fire that had already engulfed the single storey unoccupied building in the yard.
Thick acrid smoke spread across the Ibrox and Govan areas of the city and police cordoned off several streets including Fairley Street and Copland Road. Residents were being stopped from going inside the cordon to go their homes and cars were diverted away from the scene. Local residents were advised to stay indoors.
Around 30 people were evacuated from properties in Fairley Street and were taken to the Ibrox Library and Learning Centre. Residential properties in Ibrox Terrace also became involved in the fire.
The plume of black smoke was visible on the other side of the city. The fire was later brought under control by firefighters using turntable ladders , hand-held hoses and foam.
At the height of the incident there were about 60 fire service personnel involved in the incident. There were no reported injuries to either members of the public or emergency service personnel.
Office workers, who had been cleared from buildings within the police cordon watched.
Kenny Brown, 54, an accountant with the firm Harsco on Copland Road, said: "We were asked to leave around 8.45am. I could smell the smoke in the building.
"There were gas canister explosions. There were windows blown in on some of the flats. The first band we heard we thought 'what was that?' We were told it was a gas canister, so that was quite scary. One person said they could see the smoke as far away as Prestwick."
