Detectives investigating an alleged violent gang attack in Glasgow are to return to the scene on Sunday night to interview drivers.

Bryan Hanlon, 26, was seriously assaulted on Maryhill Road last Sunday, August 29.

It was reported that his car was forced off the road before he was attacked with chisels.

He had been chased along the road by at least two other cars - officers have released details of these as they seek to track them down.

Detective superintendent Alan Buchanan, of Strathclyde Police's major investigation team, told STV News that members of the public could easily have been caught up in the attack.

"Innocent members of the public could have been hurt last week," he said. "There was a reckless disregard for them, with a car chase at very high speeds through red traffic lights, swerving on to the wrong side of the road. There could have been carnage.

"Innocent members of the public could have been injured or caught up in the attack itself. We're not going to stand for this. We're sending out a strong message - we will find the people responsible for this but we can't do that without the help of the general public and we'd appeal for anyone who has any information in respect of the attack or subsequently to contact us."

The incident came a week after an attack on Bryan Hanlon's twin brother, James, who was assaulted with a power drill in Stepps and left with serious head injuries. A 19-year-old man is expected to appear in court on Monday in connection with that incident.

Now police are to speak to drivers on Maryhill Road, outside Kelvin Campus - the scene of the attack on Bryan - on Sunday evening.

He remains critically ill in Glasgow's Western Infirmary. Strathclyde officers said they were treating the attack as attempted murder.

Mr Buchanan added: "Bryan Hanlon was driving a silver Audi and we know that there was a silver BMW 5 series and a dark Range Rover that chased him along Maryhill Road for some distance - possibly also a small, dark car, possible a Corsa or a Honda, was also involved in the chase. We're keen to trace anybody who saw these vehicles making their way to where the attack eventually took place, and also where those cars are now."

The Hanlon twins are alleged to be leading members of the Glasgow underworld.

Eight people were arrested in raids across Glasgow on Thursday and Friday in connection with alleged violent gang attacks.
