Police investigations are continuing into the brutal attack on a friend of the murdered gangster Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll.

Bryan Hanlon remains in a critical condition in Glasgow' Southern General Hospital following the incident on Sunday night in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. He was mutilated and repeatedly beaten and stabbed by six or seven men using hammers, knives and chisels after his car was forced off the road and smashed into a wall.

He suffered severe head injuries in the attack and has undergone extensive brain surgery. He also required surgery to his groin area. Detectives are treating the late-night attack as attempted murder.

Mr Hanlon's twin brother James was the victim of a serious assault last week in Stepps near Glasgow. His car was forced off the road, he was chased and assaulted with a power drill.

Detectives are understood be looking at the likelihood a rival gang was behind the attacks on the Hanlon brothers.

The brothers are understood to be associates of Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll, the gangland enforcer who was shot dead outside the ASDA supermarket in the Robroyston area of Glasgow in January. James and Bryan Hanlon both attended Mr Carroll's funeral in May.

Ross Monaghan, 28, is accused of repeatedly shooting and killing Mr Carroll on January 13. He is due to stand trial later this year.

Officers from Strathclyde Police are now checking CCTV pictures from the area where Mr Hanlon was attacked on Sunday.

They have some information about the cars used by the attackers, which they say are a silver BMW 5 Series and a dark coloured 4x4 like a Range Rover or a Mitsubishi Shogun.
