Scotland's largest police force has confirmed plans to axe jobs from next month that emerged in a leaked email.
Strathclyde Police confirmed plans to axe 400 police officers and 600 of its 2700 civilian staff as part of their plans to save £45million.
Other measures will include a reduction in voluntary redundancy terms, and the use of the strategic reserve part of their budget.
A leaked email from Chief Constable Steve House, sent to staff on Monday, told workers to expect voluntary redundancies.
The union Unison expressed deep concern when the document emerged, saying that the proposals would directly affect police services in Strathclyde and no doubt the safety and well-being of the public. The union said that they wanted the Chief Constable to reconsider the cuts and to approach the Scottish Government about extra funding.
The force has recently implemented cost-saving measures, including a recruitment freeze and its chief and deputy constable are foregoing bonuses this year.
On Thursday Chief Constable Steve House said: "Triple nine response and community policing will be upheld but other areas of force business may be affected."
