New Lanark 'ghost' captured on CCTV

VIDEO: Security camera captures ghostly image at historic village.

Video will appear here shortly.

Staff at the New Lanark Mill Hotel are convinced the image of a ghost has been caught on CCTV.

A number of sightings have been reported over the years at the New Lanark World Heritage site in the Clyde Valley, but there has so far been no evidence to back up witnesses' claims.

But CCTV footage of the hotel’s rear car park captures an image that staff are convinced is in fact a ghost.

General Manager John Stirrat said: "We were routinely reviewing CCTV footage taken in the early hours of May 12 in our rear car park, an area that was formerly stables. Between 0130 and 0300 in the morning, we were startled to see, quite clearly, a mysterious ghostly shape in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen which came and went.

"At one point it disappears through a door, without opening it, and reappears. No staff, guests or members of the public were outside at the time, so it is definitely not human nor a trick of the light.”

The camera is looking downwards from the top right corner of the hotel and shows a small bright figure, about four feet high, possibly a child. Dressed in luminous white, it is seen bending and nodding before becoming motionless for a while. It then becomes more agitated and appears to change position by jumping onto a higher level. During the footage a number of bright surreal flashes can be seen.

Mr Stirrat added: "It is the strangest, eeriest thing I have ever seen,"

"It makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

"We were very fortunate to capture it on screen and it has caused considerable debate here in the village. Originally I was sceptical about ghosts but now, after reviewing the footage again and again, I’m not so sure."

New Lanark is a restored cotton mill village on the River Clyde. It was founded in 1785 and is now a World Heritage site. Once Britain’s largest cotton manufacturing centre, the village rose to fame as a model community under social reformer and philanthropist Robert Owen.

The mill operated until the late 1960s and was restored in subsequent years and is now a major tourist attraction and is one of only five UNESCO World Heritage sites in Scotland. As well as a visitor centre and hotel, the village is home to around 200 people.

This is clearly rain drops on the lense reflecting in the lights and being moved by the wind. Nothing spooky or paranormal about it in the slightest. Quite obviously a windy, rainy night.

Personally I think its dust on the camera lens that is being moved around due to a breeze... definitely NOT a ghost!

There is no doubt whatsoever that this is the ghost of Mary Queen of Scots. Everywhere you go there is a place where she "slept" - why should New Lanark be any different. Build this one up and just imagine how many more visitors will flock to the location, and, with "Homecoming 2014" looming large,.....

How can you say it was a scorching day when this happened? You can literally see the rain falling in the video. It's definitely raining.

It was not raining. We have had no rain here for weeks. There are plenty of people who can tell you stories about true experiences in the village houses and the mill buildings.

Clearly not a ghost. Ghosts don't exist! Camera distortion due to either electric interference of some kind or weather. Rain drops reflecting light seems a good enough explanation as any.

I do believe in ghosts, but, i think that was just showing something stuck on railings like a bag or some material, just blowing in the wind.

Take a step back, stop TRYING to see it as a head and torse, look at it impartially, and you'll quickly realise you're seeing at nothing more impressive or supernatural than some blurry footage showing two out-of-focus blobs. Two blobs, barely moving, doing nothing particularly interesting and certainly not "walking through a doorway".

In fact, if you look elsewhere on the image, there are numerous other visual imperfections (notably the top and top right) caused by light reflecting off dirt and refracting through the low quality glass lens of the CCTV camera. Any photographer worth his salt could tell you that's what you are looking at.

If there really are such things as ghosts, we will never be able to uncover the truth unless we tackle the matter seriously, rationally and in a level-headed, clinical, quantitative manner. In other words: not suddenly reverting into superstitious peasant mode every time someone sees a light-refracting drop of moisture on a lens, a mote of dust caught in an air current or a bag caught on a railing.

It was clearly raining. If the deniers cannot see that the video clearly shows rain, well, their interpretation of the rest is clearly suspect.

It's rainwater on the housing of the CCTV camera catching some light. No need to call Ghostbusters, this myth has already been busted.

I find it sad when people jump to such ridiculous conclusions about the existence of ghosts, when shown such mundane footage. Please people, if you want to be taken seriously, you need quality evidence, not stuff which is dismissed so easily.

as much as i believ in ghosts, it seems as if between 00:50 and 00:53 you can see a beetles wings lift and flutter at high speed, its either a bug really close up or a reflection on one against the lens.

This is surely NOT A GHOST!!

This is the lamest proof of Ghost I have ever seen in my life!!

And if it is not raining(but it appears to) then someone is just messing up with the camera (throwing water drops from top)

    OR

It's the dust particles that I am looking at falling from top in this low quality and sluggish CCTV footage!

    OR

    It's a bug playing with it's wings!

And most importantly how Mr Stirrat did you see a Ghost in this video,(No offence) but I think that this is just a trick to promote New Lanark Mill Hotel.

It took me a minute to realize they were talking about what are clearly raindrops in the bottom right corner of the lens. You can see them at the top right also. Seriously? This was actually posted as supernatural evidence?

After watching this footage several times, i can safely say that in my opinion this is rain falling and the supposed ghost is merely an out of focus spiders web with raindrops or dust on the lens.

Check out T=52 secs, you can 'clearly' see the left wing flapping and the head bobbing up and down in an aggressive fashion! It's two crypto-birds mating like a pair of dirty ducks!

phosphorus, if ejected from the ends of feather shafts would react with air to create illumination. Phosphorus is found in high quantities in mammal urine, which might explain the rectal bore holes found in animal mutilations around the world. P.S look at post no2 from a hotel worker who said it was a hot dry day with not a hint of rain! The 'rain' is phosphorus being ejected from the feather shafts of another hovering crypto-bird, just out of shot imo.

Clearly this is raindrops on the camera lens. It isn't moving like anything with any intelligence. It's so stupid that this would be submitted as evidence of anything supernatural. For this to have, "caused quite a stir" is evidence only that this town is populated by idiots.

as far as worst clip ever,, obviousley you people have never been to You Tube :P but yes,, this is rain and wind and a bug,, you can see the rain as shooting streaks going past the camera and every now and then the camera shakes, we call it wind,, the white blob is a bug being reflected by light, you can see it's wings moving just before the minute mark. Done and Done,,, :D
