The driver of a bus that hit a woman who had jumped from a motorway bridge near Glasgow has been suspended.

The 45-year-old woman was believed to have been hit by the vehicle on the M74 on Saturday night after it left Glasgow's Buchanan Bus Station at 11pm heading for London. The driver continued for 150 miles after the accident.

The Megabus service, which was operated by transport company Stagecoach, had begun its journey in Aberdeen and following the accident the driver did not stop the vehicle until its first scheduled stop after Glasgow which was in Preston.

The driver was changed and the double-decker continued on to a depot in Rugby, when passengers were transferred to two other vehicles. It is thought that police contacted the driver when it was approaching Rugby. The suspended driver has been offered counselling.

One passenger on the bus told STV News that the driver failed to stop even when he was told he had hit someone.

John Thompson said: "I said to the driver, 'you've hit a human being there,' but he kept on going. You could hear it being dragged under the bus for a while."

Mr Thompson added that the driver had announced over the bus's public address system : "The bus hit a woman outside Glasgow and if we'd stopped, you'd have been at the side of the motorway all night."

It has not been established whether the woman, who was lying on the road when she was hit, was killed by being hit by the bus or was already dead before she was run over.

Strathclyde Police said that investigations into the death were ongoing. The woman has not been named, and police said that there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

Stagecoach, which owns Megabus, confirmed that the driver had been suspended and an investigation launched into the incident.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "Safety is our absolute priority and we are taking this incident extremely seriously. We can confirm that the driver of the vehicle has been suspended while the investigation continues into the full circumstances involved.

"Our thoughts remain with the family of the woman who has died. Our driver is deeply distressed by the situation and we have offered him the support of a professional counselling service.

"We are unable to make any further comment while police are continuing to make inquiries, however we will continue to assist them in any way that we can."

As an ex stagecoach driver the present driver invloved can expect no support from stagecoach. For all they might say its no support to the driver

The facts are the lady jumped suicide!! she hit the bus. Had the driver stopped the passengers would have been delayed a long time until the police were finished with the investigation, then the driver would have been out of hours for his tachograph and more delays why a fresh driver is found.

Would stagecoach have stumped up any comp for the delays, l bet they wouldnt !

The runing times on the run are so that no driver can afford any hold up. And had he stopped at an irregular stop he would probably be dismissed for stopping at un unauthorised stop.

The driver couldnt have spoken to the passengers when they approached him as by law a driver cant be distracted while driving.

The person interviewed has no idea as to how stagecoach run their operation, its all very well saying stop and see if all is well, clearly the driver is not to blame for a selfish suicide person

My sympathy goes to the driver for having the nerve to carry on driving and getting the passengers to the ultimate destination, for in effect doing what he is paid to do!!

think this is all very strange. why did they not phone the police or insist that bus driver stopped if they knew he had hit a human being. just find this hard to believe that a whole bus sat there and didnt contact police. wonder if his tears will stop long enough for him to fill out his claim form! sounds like this guy is trying to make a bit of money out of this bus company.

This is a really terrible situation. My husband is a coach and local service driver. No bus company would ever back a driver up for not stopping at the 'Scene of an Accident'. Neither would a Union. The Driver should have stopped in the safest place which would have been the hard shoulder, put his hazards on and called the police immediately. When the police arrived the driver would have been 'stood down' from his duties, as he would have been unfit to carry on. I believe it is also common practice now to breathalise drivers involved in an RTA. Another Stagecoach Driver and Bus would have been sent out to take the passengers for their rest of their journey. There is no way that a driver after a suicide would carry out the rest of their shift. Fancy bringing tachograph rules into it. Saying the driver would have been over his hours. This is stupid talk. I have seen a Stagecoach Driver hit a dog. the police were called, he was breathalised (He was Clear) and another driver finished his shift as he was to shaken by the event. In my opinion you have a grudge against Stagecoach, which is what you are entitled to (and making yourself look exceptionally uneducated and small into the bargain), but that driver had a responsibility to his passengers. There is exceptions to all situations which companies take into account, including funnily, enough tachograph rules. I do not know of one transport company in Britain where a driver would be expected to carry on.

Can I just state the following from PCV Regulations which I have copied and pasted below.

The Driver must not be distracted in any way

Whilst driving you are not permitted to talk to anyone except

In emergencies, to deal with matters of safety, or an operational matter with a relevant person

    ie Staff/Manager/Driving Instructor)

To indicate the location of the vehicle by means of a short statement – stage carriage only

(not tours, excursions or sightseeing services)

Why is JohnDoe an Ex Stagecoach Employee? Did you ever learn your PCV Regulations. A passenger is allowed to speak to a driver in the event of an emergency.

I have worked for Rail and Bus Companies in Britain, and trust me, they all have faults, but leaving posts which are uneducated and unfounded is not the way to go.
