A navy marine smuggled a woman into Scotland's nuclear submarine base in the boot of his car.

The Ministry of Defence said it was carrying out disciplinary proceedings following the incident at Faslane high security base.

It is understood the serviceman was caught with the woman as he escorted her back out of the base on March 12. The MoD confirmed military police had interviewed the marine.

A military spokesman said: "We can confirm a member of the naval service was interviewed by MoD police following a report of a potential breach of security at HMNB Clyde on March 12.

"It's not Navy command policy to divulge personal details. The matter is now subject to an internal investigation."

Faslane base on the Clyde is about 25 miles from Glasgow and home to the Trident nuclear weapons system.

Two Navy personnel were detained by police last month after a weapon was discharged at the base.

Officers recovered an air rifle from a room following reports of a shot fired from an accommodation block on February 12.
