A man has had a fortunate escape after a fire tore through his Glasgow flat.

Around 20 firefighters were called to the tower block just off Great Western Road at about eight o'clock this morning.  The tenant managed to escape the 11th floor flat before crews arrived, but he suffered severe smoke inhalation.

Fire crews at the scene were  faced with a severe fire, heat and smoke, but successfully entered the flat where they located the fire and put it out, preventing it from spreading to the upper floor of the building.

Neighbours say it was the sound of the ferocious blaze which woke them up.

Eye-witness Tony Martin said it was: "The sound of smashing windows and I heard things crashing down to the ground, so i got up for a look to see what it was about and I saw the fire engines there and people out in the street."

No one else required medical treatment following the fire.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's Fire Investigation Team are now working with Police to identify the cause.
