Islanders on Bute are voting in Scotland’s biggest ever community buyout proposal.

Residents will vote on the plans to purchase around 2,000 acres of land owned by film director Richard Attenborough.

Those behind the bid believe the purchase of Rhubodach Forest, valued at around £1.4million, could turn the island into a top eco-tourism destination.

More than half of the 5,000 islanders eligible to vote must take park in order for the ballot to be valid.

In addition to improving access for cyclists and walkers it is hoped wood from the forest could provide a carbon neutral heating for homes on the island.

Lord and Lady Attenborough, the owners of Rhubodach Forest, have not commented on the community buyout proposal.

Residents have until Thursday to cast their vote in the postal ballot. The result is expected to be announced on Friday.
