An old school building in South Lanarkshire has been damaged by a fire.
Firefighters were called to the former home of Larkhall Academy in the town’s Broomhill Road at around 2am on Friday.
A spokesman from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue told STV News the fire was extinguished by around 7am. The spokesman added that fire officers will remain at the scene throughout the day.
Around 40 firemen were involved in tackling the blaze at its height. Pupils at Larkhall attended the old building until August last year, when they moved into their new premises.
The new £22 million school - built as part of the council’s Schools Modernisation Programme - was officially opened in December 2009.
A spokeswoman from South Lanarkshire Council said: "The old Larkhall Academy buildings are no longer in the ownership of South Lanarkshire Council, having been handed over to the construction contractor on Tuesday, January 26 for demolition prior to future development of the site by the private sector."
