A serial sex attacker was caught because his identical twin brother's DNA was on the national database.
The High Court in Glasgow heard that martial arts expert Kevan McDonald, 33, raped a schoolgirl and a 33-year-old woman and attacked two teenage girls with intent to rape in two separate incidents. The attacks took place over a three-month period between April and June this year.
McDonald admitted the two rapes and two charges of intent to rape and stealing from two of his victims.
The court was told that McDonald, from Paisley, attacked his first victim - a 17-year-old schoolgirl - as she walked through Paisley town centre at 1am on April 3 after a night out with friends. In Forbes Place, McDonald pushed the girl into bushes, removed her clothes and raped her.
Afterwards as she sat crying he told her: "Put your clothes back on." He then told the sobbing schoolgirl: "You're too tense, you need to relax," before walking off.
McDonald, who practised martial arts for two hours a day, targeted his second victim - a 16-year-old - in Craigielee Road, Renfrew, on May 27 as she walked home at 1.30am. He hid in bushes and grabbed her as she walked past. He pushed her to the ground and put his hands round her throat and then dragged her to a wooded area.
The court told that the girl was screaming at McDonald and punching at him and the noise attracted the attention of a passing taxi driver who went to her aid.
His third victim an 18-year-old girl screamed for help as he attacked her at 1.20am on June 16, in a lane near Cochrane Street, Paisley. She also managed to dial her mother on her mobile phone. Although her mother could only hear screams, her friends she had just left also heard and ran to help her.
McDonald's fourth victim was a 33-year-old Japanese woman who was cycling along the cycle path between Newton Terrace and Main Road, Elderslie, at 1pm on June 16. She was attacked when she asked McDonald for directions.
McDonald punched her on the face and grabbed her by the throat. As she began to lose consciousness, he tied her hands behind her back and raped her. After her ordeal, he gave her a bottle of water, fixed the chain on her bike which had come off and kissed her before walking off.
The DNA profiles recovered following the two rapes were found to match the profile of the accused's identical twin brother. Police enquiries with the brother led to the McDonald coming forward to the police.
The court heard that he stole a mobile phone and an ipod from the 16-year-old victim and a camera and phone from the 33-year-old woman. These items were recovered when his home was searched by police.
McDonald was examined by six psychiatrists who found that he is sane and fit to plead and was sane at the time of the offences.
His lawyer told the court that his client had instructed him to express his remorse, that he accepts that he caused trauma to his victims and that McDonald was totally ashamed of his conduct.
Judge Lord Turnbull ordered McDonald to be detained in a hospital on an interim compulsion order. The judge will determine at a further hearing next year if McDonald should be detained without limit of time or not.
The Crown has also asked him to consider imposing a lifelong restriction order on McDonald.
