By-election winner takes up seat in Westminster

The new MP for Glasgow North East has officially become an MP on Wednesday after taking his seat at Westminster.

Willie Bain, 36, won the by-election last Thursday by a comfortable majority of 8,111 over the SNP.

His campaign had seen Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Home Secretary Alan Johnson and Chancellor Alistair Darling visit the constituency to help boost Labour votes.

But the turnout was a mere 33% - the lowest ever for a Scottish constituency in a Westminster by-election.

The SNP's David Kerr came second in the by-election count with 4,120 votes.

The Conservatives’ Ruth Davidson finished third ahead of the BNP, who finished fourth and failed to retain their deposit.

Tommy Sheridan from Solidarity came fifth while Eileen Baxendale, representing the Liberal Democrats, came in a lowly sixth.

The by-election was sparked when the former Speaker, Michael Martin, now Lord Martin, quit over his handling of the Westminster expenses scandal.
