Basketball side Glasgow Rocks have been forced to cancel their forthcoming home game with Guildford Heat due to a swine flu outbreak amongst the Rocks squad.
The postponement is believed to be the first UK case of a high-profile sports fixture being cancelled because of a team contracting the illness.
The Rocks - Scotland's only professional basketball team - were due to take on the Heat on Sunday November 8 at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall Arena. All fans who bought tickets are to be refunded, with a date for the rescheduled fixture to be announced later.
Four of the eight man squad have been consigned to their beds, with coach Sterling Davis also suffering. With one player also injured, the Rocks would only have had three fit players to choose from for the game.
There have been fears raised by several football managers over the swine flu problem in sports, with Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce concerned that players from opponents Chelsea would be affected after a recent game.
Footballers in England were warned last week that spitting on the pitch during matches could increase the risk of spreading swine flu. Players from both Blackburn and Bolton Wanderers have also been sidelined from recent games after being diagnosed.
French fears over la grippe led to the cancellation of a Ligue 1 fixture between Olympique Marseille and Paris St Germain earlier this month, when three PSG players all contracted the virus 24 hours before the match.
The entire French rugby league squad were also reported to be suffering from swine flu ahead of Four Nations games with New Zealand and England, but fulfilled the fixtures and lost heavily.
