John Smeaton - the man who tackled suicide bombers during the 2007 Glasgow airport terror attacks - will stand in the Parliamentary seat vacated by the former Speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin.

Mr Smeaton is set to be unveiled as an independent candidate in the Glasgow North East by-election. The by-election was triggered when Mr Martin stood down in June in the wake of the row over MPs expenses.

The former baggage handler's bid to win the key seat is sponsored by political movement, Jury Team. Mr Smeaton will be the first candidate selected by the group to stand for a seat in the House of Commons, according to The Sun newspaper.

The 33-year-old told the newspaper he was "ready to rock the boat" in Westminster. Mr Smeaton will "make a real difference" to UK politics, a spokesman for Jury Team said.

Founded earlier this year by the former director-general of the Conservative Party, Sir Paul Judge, Jury Team backs independent candidates to Parliament. In the European Parliamentary elections, Jury Team selected 59 candidates and won approximately 80,000 votes.

Candidates for other parties already unveiled for the Glasgow North East by-election include William Bain for Labour, David Kerr for the SNP, Ruth Davidson for the Scottish Conservatives and Eileen Baxendale for the Scottish Liberal Democrats.

Austin Compton Bradford, a Jury Team spokesman, said: "The candidate is very, very well-known in Glasgow, nationally and internationally.

"We are all very tired of the system in Parliament where people's voices aren't heard. We want to bring the voices of the ordinary person into Parliament and get real people who are part of the community to stand."

God help us, his qualifications for becoming an MP .... punching a man ablaze whilst having a smoke break when he shouldve been working!

Mind you, as he has managed a campaign of self promotion worldwide he should be well suited to getting his snout in the Westminster trough

Another self serving character who has accidentally found his way into the public domain by not telling the whole truth about his achievements. Westminster will suit him well. I only hope the sensible people of Glasgow will show him he deserves nothing for his deceit.

A tad unfair. He's always been quick to say he was only one of many that day and didn't he get the medal for helping one of the other have-a-go heroes who broke his leg? The media only picked up on him the next day because of a funny turn of phrase. What do you expect him to do? I'd rather have Smeato as my MP than a fat pig who was up to his neck in expenses manure. Who paid for all those lunches at Coia's then Michael Martin? Probably me.

Smeato's got my vote. When's the election?

Jeez....is it April 1st already?? My first reaction is that this has to be a joke. I doubt he can spell 'politics'. The vacant expression on his face when a reporter asked him about party policy says it all.

This country is in a big enough mess without adding Smeaton to the mix. Anyone who wants to vote for him needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror and ask why they.

P.S. for anyone who is seriously thinking about voting for him......a mirror is the glass thing, usually found in the bathroom and when you stand in front of it you see someone who looks just like you looking back at you!!!!
