An Ayrshire woman caught with hundreds of images of children being raped and abused has been jailed for a year at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

Emma Griffin, 24, whose hoard reached the worst levels of child pornography, was told  by a sheriff her crime "provokes the disgust of the community".

In one of the first cases of its kind in Scotland, she was also described in reports as a "potential predator" who was unsuitable for community service.

The court heard that police raided her home after getting a tip-off because she had used her bank card for identification. Her computer's hard drive was removed, and the images found by police.

Several video clips were at level five, which includes babies and children being sexually tortured.

Griffin admitted downloading 464 indecent images of children being sexually abused at her home in Kilmarnock. Her lawyer told the court that his client had been the victim of sexual abuse by her maternal grandfather.

Background reports, which were described as "far from positive", described Griffin as a "potential predator"

Sheriff Watson told Griffin her crime was "a matter of great concern which quite understandably provokes the disgust of the community."

He added: "This is an offence where every child is a victim.

"You didn't stumble upon these images. They were downloaded by you for your sexual gratification."

The sheriff said Griffin had shared her interest with others and he had concerns about the "significant sexual harm" caused to the children in the images.

He said that a custodial sentence was necessary "both to punish you and to act as a deterrant to others prepared to engage in this behaviour."

She was sentenced to one year in prison, and two years on supervised licence. Griffin was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
