The SNP has unveiled its candidate for the Glasgow North East by-election – and challenged Labour to set a date for the poll.
Former television journalist David Kerr was endorsed by the Nationalists and will now battle to wrestle the seat from Labour’s grip.
The by-election comes after former House of Commons Speaker Michael Martin announced his decision to retire from parliament.
However, that was 60 days ago and a date for the by-election has yet to be set. The SNP has urged Labour to speed up the process.
Mr Kerr welcomed his selection but moved to criticise Labour, saying: “I'm deeply honoured to be given the chance to serve the people of Glasgow North East. I'll be working flat out between now and polling day to earn their trust – whenever Labour have the courage to call the by-election.
“Labour has until Tuesday to get their house in order, to move the writ and to call a by-election or the people of Glasgow North East will be left for five months without Westminster representation.
“With local schools set to close and the threat of job losses at Port Dundas, a voice for this constituency is vital. Instead of facing up to the test and calling the by-election Labour seem to want to run and hide.
"Labour has held this seat since 1935. They've had their chance and have failed. It's time for a change. It's time for the SNP."
Former BBC journalist Mr Kerr was originally rejected by local party members in favour of Glasgow councillor James Dornan earlier this month. But Mr Dornan stepped down after revelations at the weekend about his financial affairs.
The Labour candidate for the by-election is law lecturer Willie Bain. He is a local activist and secretary of the constituency Labour Party.
