A post-mortem examination will be carried out on an 11-year-old boy who died suddenly at his Dundee home.

Paramedics found Michael Burns in cardiac arrest when they were called to his house in Dundee's Longtown Place shortly before 8am on Thursday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were also called to the house and a family liaison officer was subsequently appointed.

A Tayside Police spokeswoman said inquiries were under way into the cause of his death and a post mortem was expected to take place at Glasgow's Yorkhill Hospital on Friday.

The spokeswoman added: "As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Liz Crawford, acting head teacher at Michael's school, Rowantree Primary, said: "We are absolutely devastated by this tragic news. Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.

"We are working closely with the education department to ensure that support and counselling is in place for pupils."
