An armed intruder who stabbed a man in the neck and chest in a “revenge attack” was jailed for five years on Monday.
Martin Currie repeatedly stabbed Colin McPherson before running from the flat in Dundee that he forced his way into with a group of others.
Mr McPherson's girlfriend returned to the Stirling Street flat to find him pressing his hands to his wounds and shouting for an ambulance after the attack.
The stabbing victim was taken to hospital and found to have a 12 centimetre wound to his neck.
Previously the court heard that Currie, 41, had attacked Mr McPherson after the 30-year-old had allegedly assaulted Currie’s friend David Binnie, although the incident was not reported to the police.
Lord Bannatyne told Currie at the High Court in Edinburgh: "This was a very nasty offence in my view.
"This very much appears to have been premeditated. It appears to have been some form of punishment or revenge attack."
The judge pointed out that Currie had a lengthy criminal record including offences of assault and a conviction for carrying a knife.
Lord Bannatyne said he considered Currie posed a substantial risk to the public and ordered he be kept under supervision for a further three years on his release.
Currie, of Sandeman Place, Dundee, and others decided to go to the flat to confront Mr McPherson and his girlfriend Gillian Cowan after the alleged incident involving Mr Binnie.
Miss Cowan went out to buy food from a takeaway and locked the flat door with the only key before Currie and others forced open the door and attacked Mr McPherson.
Defence counsel Frank Gallagher said Currie had "clearly indicated his regret" over the incident. He added: "He realises there is no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence."
