Shrunk!: Game developed for Dare to be Digital contest.
A video game produced by students at a Scottish university has been named one of Britain's best.
Shrunk! won the Ones to Watch prize at the BAFTA Video Game Awards in London on Friday night.
The prestigious prize was won by The Butterflyers, a team of five students at Abertay University in Dundee. They also won the best game prize at the Bafta Scotland New Talent Awards in Glasgow
Andrew Macdonald, Michael Cummings, Vykintas Kazdailis, Stuart Kemp and Jacek Wernikowski were at the awards ceremony in London. Michael, originally from Glenrothes, told stv.tv: "It was one hell of an experience - we weren't expecting to get anything! There were three great teams nominated and we were just happy to be there.
"We've had a few nominations for awards and every one has been a real surprise."
Shrunk! follows Winston, a 10-year-old boy who has been shrunk to the size of a salt-shaker. He has to make his way through levels, making obstacles shrink and grow to get past, on his way to rescue his uncle.
The team took the idea of a shrunken main character from an idea submitted by a member of the public as part of the Dare to be Digital scheme and then developed it into the game.
As well as winning the award, the ceremony gave the game's developers the chance to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in the gaming industry.
Vykintas, who comes from Lithuania, added: "It was very useful for our future careers and gave us a lot of confidence to go further. I'm really delighted we won and we're now at a big crossroads with where we go - there are lots of decisions to be made, but they're all great! It's a great place to be."
The Ones to Watch award was created to encourage and reward innovation from emerging games designers.
Each year, Dare to be Digital runs a video games development competition to select the nominations. Teams of five art and science students, or recent graduates, work together for 10 weeks from June to August. Three winning games are presented with cash prizes and go forward to form the shortlist for the award.
The three teams are then given a number of weeks to address the panel's comments and produce a final version of their game that combines best use of technology, market potential and innovation.
The winning team - Andrew, from Lenzie, near Glasgow, Michael, Vykintas, Stuart, from England, and Jacek, from Poland - met at Abertay and decided to work together to take part in the competition. "I'd love to pursue a career in this area," said Michael, "and this is something Abertay should be proud of."
Dundee is well-known as being a hub of activity in the games industry. Rockstar North, the company that created the Grand Theft Auto series, was founded in the city - and under its original name, DMA Design, it produced the classic puzzle game, Lemmings.
