Witnesses sought after Nairn body discovery

An investigation is underway after the body of a man was found in the River Nairn.

Police have said the discovery was made in the early hours of Sunday morning, close to the Merryton bridge.

It is understood the man, thought to be in his 30s, had been drinking.

Northern Constabulary said: "Police in Nairn have ascertained that the male left the Stables bar of the Star Hotel about 0015-0300 hours on 3rd May 2009 and walked down Church Street in the direction of Mill Road and was last seen in the area of Knowles Gardens.

"At this time he was intoxicated, unsteady on his feet and unaccompanied.

"No sightings have been made known to the police until he was seen in the River Nairn on the harbour side of the Merryton Bridge, close to the footpath on the Harbour Street side, at about 0616 hours, later that morning."

Police are keen to hear from any witnesses who saw the man near the River Nairn.

He is described as white, 5ft 10in, of slim build, with short dark hair, aged 30-40 years, and wearing a dark-coloured jersey with blue t-shirt underneath, blue denim jeans and white training shoes.
