Angry Orcadians are taking to the streets to protest a new private pharmacy.

The independently owned chemist has been earmarked for the small community of Dounby.

Currently, the local medical practice dispenses medicines to the community.

However, the NHS is required to consider any bids from private companies to get involved.

If the move goes ahead, the medical centre's income would be reduced by 60 per cent.

Fears are growing that this could mean job losses and a major reduction in patient services.

Locals will march through Kirkwall on Saturday to voice their discontent about the possibility of the proposal getting the green light against their wishes.

The demonstration is expected to attract more than 200 people.
