Fishing industry criticises Scottish Government

The Scottish Government has been accused of stifling the regeneration of the fishing industry at a time when Scotland's fleet is ageing.

The Scottish White Fish Producers' Association (SWFPA) has warned that real hardship may be around the corner for skippers due to a lack of fishing days at sea.

The association made the claims following a meeting where members voiced concerns over the many changes in the sector at both domestic and European level.

Mike Park, the SWFPA's chairman, said: "In relation to cod, our concerns are focused toward a cod recovery plan that still operates on a shared or collective blame principle.

"Reducing fishing opportunities on an equitable basis, as the Cod Recovery Plan promotes, is failing to understand the groundswell of regional progress.

"The end-of-year negotiations must take account of and reward ‘real' contributions to cod recovery, dealing less favourably with those that fail to live up to their responsibilities."
