Primary pupils in the Highlands have been brushing up on their cyber safety skills.

Education chiefs say it is vital young people protect themselves online while at the same time enjoying the benefits of new technology.

Computers and the internet have become an integral part of learning for pupils at Crown Primary School in Inverness.

But although the internet is a valuable resource it is not immune to abuse.

So children at the school are learning how to be good digital citizens.

Specially produced leaflets have been distributed to every pupil in the Highlands as part of the latest drive to promote safer and more responsible use of online and mobile technology.

Louise Jones from Highland Council said: “Young people are using social networking sites and gaming technology where they can talk to people that maybe they don’t know who they are.”

Senior pupils here are playing a leading part in raising personal safety issues - and their message seems to be getting across.

Pupil Rachael Marr said: “We’ve been teaching the younger children about internet safety and making sure they understand why it’s important.”

Council leaders as well as Northern Constabulary and NHS Highland are continuing to work with other agencies to develop an e-Safety Strategy, ensuring pupils stay safe when they log on.
