The Queen has joined thousands of spectators for Saturday's Braemar Gathering.

Around 15,000 people were set to flock to the biggest event in the Highland Games calendar.

The gathering, which has attracted generators of royals and other famous guests, is now 160 years old.

The games include tug-of-war, caber-tossing and throwing the hammer.

They also feature some slightly more sedate events, including Highland dancing and piping competitions - and a children's sack race.

The Aberdeenshire event is steeped in history: there have been gatherings taking place at Braemar since the days of King Malcolm Canmore, some 900 years ago.

The Queen Mother, Princess Diana and former prime minister Tony Blair have all taken their places in the royal box at previous gatherings.
