Egg Donor Wanted: Couple placed appeal in newspaper
A couple desperate to have a baby have resorted to placing an advert for egg donors in a local newspaper.
The appeal went out in the Aberdeen press on Monday with the headline: ‘The Ultimate Gift – can you help?’
The pair have been trying for a baby for eight years according to the ad and say their “only hope” to have a family is to find an egg donor.
The advert appeals for someone aged between 18 and 35 to come forward.
Lorraine Stewart of the Aberdeen Fertility Clinic said: "We don’t have donors as it is that we can call up so we are really on people just as they contact us, processing them and bringing them through to donate.
“We've got a waiting list of about 25, 26 people at the moment waiting for donated eggs, we probably get about nine donors or a year so as you can see its a few years for bringing them through for treatment."
The situation reflects a trend of supply problems in artificial insemination.
Earlier in the year it was revealed that women in the UK were looking abroad for sperm donors following a significant drop in UK donations.
The sharp fall was attributed to a law change in 2005 which meant donors could no longer be granted anonymity.
