Robyn Oldham: No further recommendations from inquiry
The mother of a teenager killed when she was hit by car while stepping off her school bus has expressed anger at the outcome of an inquiry into her death.
Robyn Oldham, 15, was killed moments after stepping off a school bus in Aberdeenshire in September 2008.
She was airlifted from the scene at Birkenhills near Turriff but died as a result of her injuries.
A two-day fatal accident inquiry into her death was held in Banff last month
However Sheriff Fleetwood concluded that he had no recommendations to make in terms of changing the law regarding school buses.
Since her daughter's death Carla Oldham has become a vociferous campaigner for school bus safety.
She had hoped the inquiry would have lead to a radical overhaul – including making it illegal to overtake school buses when they are stationary.
Sheriff Fleetwood said the “extensive and appropriate steps” taken by Aberdeenshire Council were a proportionate response to the tragedy.
Robyn had only recently moved to the area with her family and had only started using the school bus to and from Turriff Academy two weeks prior to the crash.
Just weeks after the tragedy, 12-year-old Alexander Milne died in a similar incident on the B9033 near St Combs.
Last November Aberdeenshire Council introduced new school bus signage in response to the accidents.
