Bosses in charge of the biggest entertainment venue in the north-east are denying reports that it is facing imminent closure.

It follows continued speculation about the financial state of the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC), which is understood to be struggling with huge debts.

Councillors are expected to discuss a confidential report into its future at a meeting on Wednesday.

Bosses deny conference centre faces axe

Aberdeen City Council has already provided millions of pounds worth of loans to the popular venue.

On Monday it was reported that the venue is seeking further financial assistance.

However in a statement, Brian Horsburgh, the Managing Director of the AECC said: "While we cannot comment on any specific details of what is a confidential report, suggestions that AECC could be facing imminent receivership are incorrect as we have a fully funded and agreed budget for the coming financial year 2010/11.

It is also inaccurate to describe this is a rescue package. We are not asking for any additional funding, instead we are seeking a solution which will enable AECC to operate on a firmer footing in the long term."

It is understood one of the issues to be discussed by councillors on Wednesday will be the possible erection of a four star hotel next to the Bridge of Don site which may help to generate much needed income.

However Councillor Willie Young says it is essential this is not funded by the taxpayer and should be financed privately.

He is also calling on the Scottish Government to step in and rescue the centre.

He said: "What I think we should be doing is that we should be going to the government in Edinburgh and say to them - you subsidise the Glasgow Conference Centre, you subsidise the Edinburgh Conference Centre.

“Here we have oil - we're the oil capital of Europe. You really need to come in and make this an oil centre, an oil conference centre. Give us some money to help us out."

A spokesman for Aberdeen City Council said he could not comment on a confidential report.
