A love-struck engineer landed in court after he drunkenly penned sexual letters to a woman he fancied.
John Flynn, of Aberdeen, grew obsessed with the pretty woman and embarked on a lewd letter campaign because he was too shy to ask her out.
But the shamed 54-year-old ended up being arrested by police because the notes left the 31-year-old alarmed.
On Friday Flynn admitted his hopes were now dashed and said he was "terribly shocked" when he found out what he had written.
However, he claimed he could still have had a chance if he had only signed his scribbles - because she seemed "really keen".
Flynn said the woman became the object of his affections after he spotted her walking down a street near his home when he was hanging out washing.
He said: "I offered to give her some flowers and she thanked me profoundly.
Later the woman returned and asked him if Flynn would put some shelves up for her at her home. He said he did not go “in case he got a wee bit frisky” because he was drinking at the time.
Flynn then started sending her letters because, "I didn't know what to say, because I'm shy”.
Flynn told how he sent four notes, one through her letterbox and the others in her wheelie bin, between July 11 and 22 last year. One of the notes said: "I wouldn't mind kissing you darling".
Police were called to his home after the woman reported the incident and he was charged with breach of the peace.
He added: "I couldn't remember what I wrote, my lawyer read it out to me. I was terribly shocked when I read the letters…I'm embarrassed."
Flynn said he accepted the notes would have caused the woman, who cannot be named, alarm.
But he claimed: "If she knew who it was, she wouldn't have reported me to the police because she had a liking for me…She seemed really keen."
Flynn later admitted breaching the peace by sending sexual letters to the woman's home at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
Sheriff Colin Harris ordered him to carry out 100 hours of community service and put him on probation for three years.
He also placed Flynn on the sex offenders register for three years.
The sheriff warned him: "If you do not attend all the appointments and if you commit any further offences during probation you will be brought back to court."
