A Moray butchers has been crowned World Scotch Pie champions.

Forres-based Murdoch Brothers Butchers beat off strong competition from a record entry of 85 butchers and bakers – 84 of them from Scotland.

The award is the realisation of a long-held ambition for the company, who have come agonisingly close to scooping the award in the past.

Now under the third generation of family management of brothers Graham and Ronnie, the company have supplied quality meat products from locally sourced livestock since 1916.

The company received the award at a special lunch at Carnegie College, Dunfermline on Wednesday.

The popular competition is now in its 11th year and to date no butcher or baker from a major city has won the title.

It is the second time a Forres firm has claimed the top prize boasts another winner after Lewis Maclean of Maclean’s Highland Bakery won the title in 2003.

Buckhaven-based baker and butcher, Alan Stuart, who is the event organiser, said: “The objective is to raise standards in the industry and we believe we have achieved that.

“We were delighted that 80 companies entered this year and we are also encouraged to see a number of new entrants, 15 in total.”
