Crucial fishing quota talks underway

A crucial week for Scotland's fishing industry is underway with key talks being held on quotas for the fleet.

The first round of negotiations with Norway to set catch limits for the year ahead began today in Bergen, Norway.

Meanwhile European ministers are gathering in Brussels later in the week to discuss conservation measures.

It is the start of a series of meetings culminating in the Council of Ministers in December, which will set the catching opportunities for Scots trawlermen.

Mike Park of the Scottish White Fish Producers' Association said: "In the last three months of this year we have very little quota to catch and very little time to catch it which means the money coming into the ports is very little which means there is not a lot to go around in the community.

“So it's crucially important that next year with the talks coming up over this next week that we get it right so that we do have equal opportunities for all the sectors of the fleet next year."
