Fears that an Aberdeen factory which employs more than 30 blind or disabled workers could be about to close have been raised at Prime Minister's Questions.

The Glencraft factory has had a troubled recent history after Aberdeen City Council withdrew its funding package last year.

But the Authority agreed to buy the firm's factory and lease it back allowing them to continue trading.

However the company's future again appears to be in the balance.

Aberdeen South MP Anne Begg raised the matter in the Commons.

She asked: “What is my right honourable friend’s reaction to the news that the Glencraft factory in my constituency could be forced out of business due to the lack of support from the SNP/Liberal Democrat council?

“If the factory is to close, this would mean that over 30 disabled people in Aberdeen would be losing their jobs.”

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown replied: “When there was a Labour council Glencraft got a huge amount of support from the council.

“I’ve heard that the grants are being cut by the SNP/Liberal Democrat Council administration in the area.

“We will look at what we can do but it is clearly important in a recession to help those people who are most in need of support and that includes disabled members of our community.”
