Diver dies in Orkney

A diver has died after an accident during an expedition in Orkney.

Emergency services were contacted after the 24-year-old man was pulled from the water at Scapa Flow at 11.45am on Wednesday.

Attempts were made to revive the man on board a boat while he was taken to ambulance staff waiting on the shore.

Despite further attempts to save him he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had been with a group of divers around the St Colm wreck when the incident happened.

Northern Constabulary said inquiries were being carried out into the circumstances.

The man's details would not be released until all next of kin had been informed, a force spokesman said.

The historic Scapa Flow has been used by ships for centuries and remains a popular destination for divers.
